Monks at Ampleforth do a variety of things, including runnng Ampleforth College, a senior boarding school which sits beside the Abbey. Parts of the school are literally connected to the Abbey, and consequently the cloisters, and all the monks’ accommodation.

The Scottish executive has announced that it is going to abolish tutition fees in Scotland – technically the scheme is called the ‘graduate endowment’, and works in the same way as the English ‘top up fees’, althought the fee is set at £2,289 for scottish students, a far cry from the £9000 in England.

bridge tolls

As England prepares to introduce road pricing, I watched BBC parliament yesterday as the Scottish Parliament voted to abolish tolls on the Forth and Tay bridges. Broadly speaking, I’m in favour of abolishing the tolls, but it was quite exciting watching the debate live for something which will have imminent tangible consequences for me.
