Archive for February, 2008

This evening, at my grandmother’s invitation, I went to a lecture at Abertay University. Given by former scotland rugby international Gergor Townsend, it was, perhaps ironically in the circumstances, entitled “winning ways”
Interesting stuff though. Winning was defined, not as coming first, but as maximising your potential. He talked through the ways in which professional sportsmen [...]

Intimidation and Stage Fright

Several people in the last few weeks have commented to me that I’m not easily intimidated. Each time, I’ve reacted thinking WHAT???? but realised before I opened my mouth that a confident and articulate “actually, I often feel intimated, I just normally choose to be brave” wouldn’t be believed. A Radioactive School

Let’s hope this is a one day story.

Thankfully, Scottish rugby has been granted something of a reprieve this week. Sure we can’t win, and we can barely score a try, but at least we’re not drugs cheats.

Lent (1)

A lot can change in 40 days.
Today I learnt I have some job security – I’m going to stick in the job I’m doing, for 3.5 days a week for the next wee while. Which is nice, as no longer will I be wondering how things are going to pan out for the next week.

Happiness at Work

This is an interesting reminder of why it matters that work is a happy place.
Emotional contagion
Emotional contagion is a strong psychological effect in which we “catch” the happy, sad or angry moods of others.
An employee in an upbeat mood will help boost the moods of others — which is particularly important when that person is [...]

Apartheid

Just 18 years ago today, de Klerk dismantled apartheid. It’s frightening to think that 18 years ago, it was considered a courageous step to do it because influential people still supported apartheid. I guess in some ways some people still do.
