How do you evangelise? Think these displays of John 3:16 help. Or not?

Evangelism in a world where people believe they are not hungry
Posted in emerging churches, evangelism, musings, quotes on June 19, 2008 | 3 Comments »
I was reading Peter Rollins’ How (not) to Speak of God again this evening, and this comment on evangelism, well bedded in a much larger argument about the nature of faith struck me as being right on the button:
In a world where people believe they are not hungry, we must not offer food but rather [...]
unsmug evangelism

One of the great things about temping is getting the chance to see a load of different offices in action. One of the apparently universal features of offices around Edinburgh, however, is the presence of an overweight lady who is unsuccessfully trying to lose weight.
Conversation inevitably turns at some point to the latest weightloss technique. [...]

If there’s one thing my dissertation has convinced me of, it’s the need for churches to try more seriously to communicate the gospel effectively in the emerging culture. Being from Scotland has compounded the frustration this conviction causes, as I sit in the pew watching the people around me fail to take the challenge seriously. [...]
Dancemat Worship

Some schools in Luton have introduced dancemats into PE, and pupils follow a big screen to do their moves, and the plan is, get some exercise in a fun and non-competitive way.
The, er, dream (?) of dancemat worship is that much closer now, particularly for churches in Luton now. You could hire the mats, stick [...]
Church for people who don’t go to church

“More than 70% of people in the UK now have no contact or history with the church. This is just one experimental way of expressing Christian faith outside a church setting. We have a genuine desire to build community; these days so many people are isolated and cut off from support. And we’re trying to [...]
Prostrate Trouble

Just after church this evening, after a hymn which talked about the crystal meth sea, the person sitting on one side of me leaned over and whispered, “I see we’ve had prostrate trouble again this evening.”
It took just a moment for me to realise that what she was referring to was the vocabulary in the [...]

I was reading a book about evangelicalism last week, which included a series of tips from the 1970’s for how to evangelise effectively.
One of the tips that really struck me was that Christians should seek opportunities to expose their faith, rather than imposing their faith on others.
Normally when I think of something being exposed, [...]
Rejecting Transactionary Christianity (2)

Christian faith cannot be a transaction in which you seek to gain heaven by believing or behaving in a particular way. To reduce faith to something we do or have in order to get something else sells Christian hope short and misrepresents God.
Christian faith is a response to who God is, not a means of [...]
Evangelism Techniques

How do we evangelise, what do we evangelise, what works? I don’t know, my dissertation has given me almost total brain fog, but I saw this quote at the weekend, and it made me wonder about some of the strategies for evangelism I saw, and indeed was part of, at university. No wonder they didn’t [...]
