Returning to the nation’s foundations. One of the themes of Obama’s inaugural address today was returning to the source, the foundations of the United States as key to directing its future. Obama claims a vision to build a nation on the solid ground of the nation’s foundational truths and ambitions.
He sets the context of his [...]

The Bible, prostitutes, and government
Posted in life, musings, politics, theology on January 8, 2009 | 1 Comment »
After yesterday’s admission that I’d found myself arguing in favour of prostitution at homegroup, I think I should do a bit of explaining.
Why does a repressed theologian find themselves among a group of Christians arguing in favour of something that is so obviously not Christian.
First, a marker. I was making a point about prostitution where [...]

The problem: teenagers drinking alcohol in the streets and getting up to mischief.
Solution: Banning under 21s from buying alcohol from supermarkets and offlicences?
That is what the scottish government is likely to propose tomorrow. But I can’t help thinking its a bit silly. In theory, it will mean 18 year olds are only found drinking in [...]

Sometimes its hard to figure out how big economic changes actually effect us at a day to day level, and sometimes its painfully clear. Rising petrol prices is one, although that hasn’t really changed the way I live. Now though, the credit crunch has claimed its first victim among my friends.
It’s not really her fault. [...]

I worked out this afternoon that 1/50 of Scotland’s population was in Manchester yesterday watching Rangers get beaten by Zenit St Petersburg in the Uefa cup final. That’s 100,000 angry rangers supporters.
Do you reckon that caused some sort of noticable blip in the Scottish economy? I mean, let’s say 3 million people in scotland go [...]

The local girls football team qualifies for the finals of a competition. This finals has been played on saturdays in the past, but this year is being held on a sunday. The parents of several of the girls withdraw them from the team, forbidding them from playing on a sunday and preventing the team from [...]
A Radioactive School

Let’s hope this is a one day story.
Some radioactive marked packages have been found in a language school in edinburgh. the good news is that they seem to have been in the cupboard for a long time, so this is probably not terrorism related. Let’s hope it’s a prank…

At a cost of a mere £100,000, the SNP have rebranded Scotland, or at least changed the slogan that greets people in airports.
It used to be “the best small country in the world”, but what is it now?

Beware England is invading Scotland! (or why slipperly slope arguements don’t work)

There are plans afoot to make part of a Scottish military base legally part of England. I tell you, this is a dangerous first step. Sure, the english reasons seem sensible now, but there is always the danger that this might lead to further encroachments – a military base here, a parliament there…
Or perhaps there [...]
