At 5am on saturday princes street in the middle of Edinburgh will close to all traffic for work in preparation for the trams. I predict chaos.
This time round it is even more frustrating because the contractors won’t even be starting work immediately, they’ve demanded more money from the council, and the council have said no. [...]

Budget Through
Posted in Scottish on February 4, 2009 | Leave a Comment »
The scottish budget passed this afternoon, after it was defeated last week. This is no insignificant thing, £33 Billion at stake. But also the whole minority government project.
Last week, SNP had got the support of the tories and the 1 independent, but failed despite dramatic last moment promises to get the greens on board. This [...]
No alcohol at home for the under 21s?

The problem: teenagers drinking alcohol in the streets and getting up to mischief.
Solution: Banning under 21s from buying alcohol from supermarkets and offlicences?
That is what the scottish government is likely to propose tomorrow. But I can’t help thinking its a bit silly. In theory, it will mean 18 year olds are only found drinking in [...]
We’ve got the Unitary Constitution. So can we doing something now please?

So today, in the shortest congregational meeting of my life so far (although, not actually all that short), the congregation of the church of which I am parted voted to adopt a unitary constitution. I have been trying to understand how this is going to make things different. Sometimes drawing pictures helps me think, so [...]

It can be hard to articulate what it means to be scottish. Fortunately, we’ve got the Irn-Bru advertising team out to help us. This ad was brought out this week, and it makes me proud to be a Scot!

1 in 50 scots…

I worked out this afternoon that 1/50 of Scotland’s population was in Manchester yesterday watching Rangers get beaten by Zenit St Petersburg in the Uefa cup final. That’s 100,000 angry rangers supporters.
Do you reckon that caused some sort of noticable blip in the Scottish economy? I mean, let’s say 3 million people in scotland go [...]
No footie on sunday…

The local girls football team qualifies for the finals of a competition. This finals has been played on saturdays in the past, but this year is being held on a sunday. The parents of several of the girls withdraw them from the team, forbidding them from playing on a sunday and preventing the team from [...]

Yesterday was amazing.
My sister and I went to the Standing Order to watch the calcutta cup match. To be honest, I wasn’t feeling too hopeful, but it was impossible to ignore the sense of optimism and hope in the pub. We may have been 5 seconds behind the singing at murrayfield, but the sound of [...]
Winning ways and Scottish Rugby Player

This evening, at my grandmother’s invitation, I went to a lecture at Abertay University. Given by former scotland rugby international Gergor Townsend, it was, perhaps ironically in the circumstances, entitled “winning ways”
Interesting stuff though. Winning was defined, not as coming first, but as maximising your potential. He talked through the ways in which professional sportsmen [...]
Rugby, asthma, and the hazards of inhalers

Thankfully, Scottish rugby has been granted something of a reprieve this week. Sure we can’t win, and we can barely score a try, but at least we’re not drugs cheats.
Scott MacLeod has had asthma since he was 2. Recently he took Terbutaline, as a reliever inhaler, but tested positive for doping because he didn’t have [...]
